But for today, we will continue with disassembly and remove the heat pipe/heatsink assembly. Perhaps one day I’ll revisit Switch modification and explore modifying an older generation of Switch. On the original Switch, this would be all the disassembly needed to perform the modification.
This is a type of thermal compound used to dissipate heat generated from the CPU to the metal plate, which is how the metal plate acts as a heat sink. There is a putty/slime substance that needs to be wiped off from both the metal plate and the processor plate. Inside, we can see a large metallic plate that not only acts as a protective shell for the electronics inside, but functions as a heatsink for the CPU, as well as an electromagnetic shield for the circuitry. Once the screws holding the rear shell are removed, the rare shell can then be lifted off. Aside from the 4 main screws in the corners, the rest of the screws are standard Phillips head screws. The Nintendo Switch, like all Nintendo devices, have tri-wing screws that need to be removed. Today we will be exploring the process of a hardware modification of a Nintendo Switch. In this post/episode/project (haven’t decided what to call it yet), we’re stepping it up a bit (or a lot since this kind of modification is quite advanced and not for the faint of heart). While there are many intricate parts and components that make up the device, the risk of damaging it was quite minimal (as long as you put all the parts back properly).
